Weights are the minimum and maximum in IS 278:2009 Table 1, and the metres follow from them. Closer barbs mean more point wire, so size 1 at 75 mm is heavier per metre than size 2 at 150 mm on the same line wire. Every size is the two strand construction: two line wires twisted together, with four-point barbs 13 to 18 mm long wrapped two to seven lays. Gauge. Barbed wire is still ordered by gauge: 12 gauge is about 2.5 mm, IS 278's 2.50 mm line wire; 13 gauge about 2.24 mm; 14 gauge about 2.00 mm, the point wire for sizes 3 to 6. A 12 x 14 barbed wire is 2.50 mm line with 2.00 mm points, which is size 3 or 4 depending on the barb spacing. Order by designation, for example Steel Barbed Wire, A-1 IS 278: Type A is the Iowa pattern, size 1. We supply it in 25 and 50 kg rolls; a 50 kg roll runs twice the metres in the column above. Clause 14 of the standard fixes no coil weight, only that the wire is wound on reels and fastened compactly. The last column is what each is usually bought for. That is trade practice, not something the standard fixes, so tell us the job if it is not one of these.
