Coating is quoted in grams of zinc per square metre, which is what decides how long the wire lasts outdoors and what it costs. A heavier coating also adds weight on top of the steel, so a coil of a given length weighs more than the bare diameter suggests. IS 280 covers the wire and IS 4826 the coating.
