| IS 1786 | High strength deformed steel bars and wires for concrete reinforcement | TMT bars |
Indian Standards are published by the Bureau of Indian Standards and are their property. They are named here so you can check a figure against the source, and quoted only as far as is needed to say what a number means. A material test certificate travels with the vehicle.
IS 1786:2008, mass and tolerance for the sizes that move, at the 12 MTR standard length
| Size | Mass per MTR | A 12 MTR bar | Tolerance, batch | A bar may weigh, kg | Bars in 1 MT |

| 6 mm | 0.222 kg | 2.66 kg | ±7% | 2.48–2.85 | 350–404 |
| 8 mm | 0.395 kg | 4.74 kg | ±7% | 4.41–5.07 | 197–227 |
| 10 mm | 0.617 kg | 7.40 kg | ±7% | 6.89–7.92 | 126–146 |
| 12 mm | 0.888 kg | 10.66 kg | ±5% | 10.12–11.19 | 89–99 |
| 16 mm | 1.580 kg | 18.96 kg | ±5% | 18.01–19.91 | 50–56 |
| 20 mm | 2.470 kg | 29.64 kg | ±3% | 28.75–30.53 | 32–35 |
| 25 mm | 3.850 kg | 46.20 kg | ±3% | 44.81–47.59 | 21–23 |
| 28 mm | 4.830 kg | 57.96 kg | ±3% | 56.22–59.70 | 16–18 |
| 32 mm | 6.310 kg | 75.72 kg | ±3% | 73.45–77.99 | 12–14 |
Table 2 of IS 1786:2008 sets the tolerance on nominal mass: ±7 percent on a batch up to and including 10 mm, ±5 percent over 10 and up to 16 mm, and ±3 percent over 16 mm. On an individual sample only the minus side is specified, at 8, 6 and 4 percent for the same three bands, and for coils the individual figure is ±8, ±6 and ±4 percent. Clause 7.1 allows a cut length to deviate by plus 75 and minus 25 mm. The mass in this table is the nominal mass, which clause 7.2.1 defines at a density of 0.00785 kg per square millimetre per metre.
