Indian Standards are published by the Bureau of Indian Standards and are their property. They are named here so you can check a figure against the source, and quoted only as far as is needed to say what a number means. A material test certificate travels with the vehicle.
Binding wire, the gauges supplied and how they are packed
| Diameter | SWG | Weight per MTR | Metres per kg | Packed as | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.90 mm | 20 G | 0.0050 kg | 200.0 m | 2, 5 or 25 kg | Tying reinforcement on site |
| 1.20 mm | 18 G | 0.0089 kg | 112.5 m | 2, 5 or 25 kg | RCC work and general site use |

Worked from d squared over 162, steel at 7850 kg per cubic metre, so it is the steel itself. Black annealed and soft enough to twist by hand. The gauge names are nominal: 20 SWG is 0.914 mm, 18 SWG is 1.219 and 16 SWG is 1.626 exactly, and the trade rounds them to 0.90, 1.20 and 1.60. Coils run 5 to 25 kg, with a 2 kg pack for small lots. IS 280 covers mild steel wire and sets the tolerance on diameter. The last column is what each is usually bought for. That is trade practice, not something the standard fixes, so tell us the job if it is not one of these.
